What is the plot of The Menu movie?
Tyler and his friend Margot Mills travel by boat to Hawthorne, a private island restaurant owned and maintained by star chef Julian Slowik. Lilian, a cuisine reviewer, her editor Ted, rich couple Richard and Anne, George, a post-prime movie star and his personal assistant Felicity, and business colleagues Soren, Dave, and Bryce are among the other attendees at the meal. Elsa, the restaurant maitre d’, gives the group a tour of the island, noting that Margot was not Tyler’s assigned visitor for the evening.
Slowik’s accompanying monologues and the courses become increasingly unsettling and aggressive. Slowik orders the suicide of one staff member and the amputation of a guest’s finger by another. In front of the customers, the restaurant’s key investor drowns. When guests attempt to flee, the crew returns them. Slowik declares that all of the guests were chosen because they either contributed to him losing his passion for his craft or make a living by exploiting the work of artisans like him, and then declares that the night will end with everyone dead. Slowik provides Margot the option of dying with the crew or with the guests because her arrival was unforeseen.
Slowik turns on Tyler, claiming that he was personally invited and knew the meal would end in everyone’s death, which infuriates Margot. Margot is revealed to be an escort named Erin, whom Tyler hired for the evening knowing full well she would die. Slowik humiliates Tyler even more by making him cook in front of the visitors and workers, then leads Tyler to commit suicide by hanging himself in a nearby storeroom. Slowik determines Erin belongs on the crew and assigns her to get a barrel needed for dessert, stating Elsa left it behind.
Erin sneaks into Slowik’s house, which houses a Hawthorne copy, only to be ambushed by Elsa. Erin kills Elsa by stabbing her in the neck in self-defense. Erin finds a radio, phones for help, and returns to the restaurant after viewing newspaper cuttings from Slowik’s prior life in his minimally decorated office. Slowik is held at gunpoint by a Coast Guard officer who arrives from his boat, offering hope to the visitors. The officer then shows himself to be a disguised line cook and returns to the kitchen.
Slowik now argues that Erin belongs with the guests as a result of her betrayal, but Erin mocks his dishes and complains that she is still hungry. Erin orders a cheeseburger and fries after seeing a photo of a young, cheerful Slowik working at a fast-food restaurant. Slowik is moved by her simple request and makes the dish according to her instructions. Erin takes a piece and compliments his cooking before asking if she may buy it “to go.” Slowik packs her food and allows her to depart. Erin escapes the island by boat, which is docked nearby.
Slowik concludes the event by paying tribute to s’mores by covering the guests in marshmallow coats and chocolate hats. Slowik then sets fire to the entire restaurant, killing all of the diners, workers, and himself while Erin watches from the boat while eating her meal.
